El-Rufai: N3.5m NOT Only For Zakzaky’s Food Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna state, says the N3.5 million the federal government spends every month to feed Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), also covers the security around him. Last week, Lai Mohammed, minister of information, had said the federal government spends N3.5 million every month to feed El-Zakzaky. The statement had generated a controversy, with many accusing the minister of making a false claim. But speaking when he received the management team of The Sun Newspaper in Kaduna on Thursday, the governor said the amount covered the cost of feeding those around Zakzaky. He said the Shi’ite leader was not detained illegally but held in custody as ordered by the court. “The N3.5 million monthly feeding on El-Zakzaky is not only about his food, but other expenses on security men attached to him. Ganduje: the video, the science and the law

Ganduje: the video, the science and the law By Ibraheem Dooba, Ph.D. We've heard and read truckloads of debates on the authenticity of the series of videos published by the Daily Nigerian showing Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State receiving some money. Many have argued that it is fake, others contend that it is real. Even foreign organisations have been cited about the authenticity. However, beyond the torrents of opinions, to my knowledge, no discussion has delved into the science of how it can be real or fake. If something is real, it invites no further discussion. If it's fake however, it elicits questions about how it can be fake. Therefore, that is the gap I want to fill. Since I have a PhD in information technology and have been a student of machine learning, I intend to use this controversy as a teachable  moment on what is possible. And warn the nation that it could be worse. Yet, it's not the duty of this column to tell if the videos are fake or re

The vice president revealed that many world leaders, including a former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela and former presidents of the United States of America – Gerald Ford and Bill Clinton – were also adopted. Osinbajo noted that the sheer number of little children all over the country is disheartening. The vice president spoke yesterday in Lagos at the 2nd Annual Conference of the Heritage Adoption Support and Advocacy Group (HASAAG). He said having been to virtually every state in the country, he found that many abandoned children were everywhere. According to him, these children could have been given a better life but for the process of adoption which is very cumbersome. He urged more Nigerians to embrace the idea of adopting children,

Nigeria Can Pay Living Wage, Says Oshiomhole

Image
National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Adams Oshiomhole  said yesterday that Nigeria can afford living wage for workers. He said non payment of salaries by governors creates a viscious circle leading to low production and eventual loss of jobs. Oshiomhole said as a governor, he told his colleagues that payment of salaries was no burden, but a means of enhancing the development potential of the state, adding that the country’s major problem is stealing of public resources in the name or salary payment. The former Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) president spoke on a television programme. He said: “My views are clear, that payment of wages is not an act of kindness for an employer to pay the employees’ wages at the end of the month… Even the Holy Bible says that the laborer is entitled to its wages. “I think, again, this is where President Buhari stands out clearly. He has publicly asked public sector employers; how do you sleep when you have not paid
