Mr. Ahmed Pantami, the National Chairman, Rice Millers Association of Nigeria in Gombe, made the appeal in Gombe Pantami said the closure of the land borders had increased the activities of rice production nationwide, hence, the acqusition of modern equipment to facilitate the processing of rice production in large scale. He noted that the traditional methods of drying rice paddies were no longer helpful, considering the need to meet the high demand for rice across the country, to ensure food security and sufficiency. According to him, with modern rice drying machine and other equipment, there will be wider acceptance of locally processed rice, which will gradually replace the consumption of foreign rice in the country. He noted that a lot of youths had been absorbed from the streets since the closure of borders, adding “ the streets of Gombe are now empty of youths who before now take into drug abuse''.

...steps up Enforcement  The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has called on residents to properly dispose of their domestic wastes by bagging them and patronizing assigned PSP operators.  The Managing Director of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, in a statement, disclosed that measures had been put in place to reposition the services of PSP operators in the state and ensure that household waste evacuation was carried out at least once in a week. Dr. Gbadegesin said that PSP operators, as partners in progress in achieving a sustainable environment in Lagos, were being empowered by the state government to enable them perform optimally, adding that residents should endeavour to pay for service rendered. The Sokoto State Commissioner of Science and Technology, Dr Kulu Abubakar, has pledged more support for youths to be self reliant in Nigeria. Dr Abubakar made this known when she received an Award of Excellence from a youth organisation "Nigerian Peace Initiative for Peace and Good Governance" in her office in Sokoto State. China is scouring the world for meat to replace the millions of pigs killed by African Swine Fever (ASF), boosting prices, business and profits for European and South American meatpackers as it re-shapes global markets for pork, beef and chicken. The European Union, the world’s second largest pork producer after China, has ramped up sales to the Asian giant although it can only fill part of the shortfall caused by ASF. Argentina and Brazil have approved new export plants to meet demand and are selling beef and chickens, as well as pork, to fill the gap. U.S. producers, however, have been hampered due to tariffs imposed by Beijing. Other Asian countries are also ready to step up imports as they, too, deal with outbreaks of ASF. NEMA moves to prevent flooding in Ondo, environs The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has organised a stakeholders’ meeting to put on alert relevant emergency management agencies and create awareness ahead of impending rainfall warnings till December. The Head, Ekiti Operations office of NEMA, Olusegun Afolayan, made this known in Akure on Friday. Afolayan spoke on the sidelines of a one-day stakeholders’ meeting on flood preparedness, response and mitigation. Ekiti Operations Office covers Ondo, Osun  and Ekiti. Afolayan said the programme became imperative after Nigerian Meteorological Agency had warned that rain would not stop soon, especially in the Southern part of the country. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) on sourcing of data for the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Dr Yemi Kale, the Statistician General of NBS who made this known in Abuja said that the MoU would enable policymakers track the country’s attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The statistician explained that the MoU was for the conduct of the 6th round of the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS VI) and the National Immunisation Coverage Survey (NICS). He said apart from the legal provision requiring UNICEF to partner with NBS in conducting large-scale surveys such as MICS, NICS or SMART Nutrition, they had always partnered with the bureau in carrying out several other small surveys, assessments and evaluation exercises. An Israeli research has found that global warming increases the risk of stroke among 50-year-old people and older ones, the Hebrew newspaper Israel Hayom reported on  Friday. Stroke occurs when there is a sudden disruption in the blood supply to the brain tissue, causing permanent nerve injury, complications and death. According to the World Stroke Organisation, 15 million people, worldwide, suffer from stroke each year and 5.8 million people die from it. The Israeli study, conducted by researchers from University of Haifa, is based on the stroke record in the Israeli Ministry of Health. The purpose of this study is to examine the relation between high ambient temperature (as well as daily temperature range) and stroke risk during the summer. The study found that a rise of one degree Celsius increases by 10 per cent the risk of getting stroke within six days.
