A house three storey residential building containing a private school, OHEN Nursery & Primary School, Ita Faji, collapsed in Lagos lsland. The house which trapped over 40 causalities including pupils, proprietress and teachers.
Flycomnews gathered at the scene of the collapsed building, that owner of the school is Aunty Esther and the population of the school is yet to be ascertain as so many speculations have it that they are about 120 pupils. On this fateful day, the upper classes, that is Primary Primaries 5-6, have been taken out for Physical & Health exercise.
The Governor of Lagos state Mr Akinwunmi Ambode who later arrived at the scene of the collapsed building on Lagos lsland, commiserated with the families and relatives of the victims who were trapped in the collapsed building. While appreciating the efforts of the combined rescues officials for the commitment, he appealed to the residents of Lagos lsland to do the needful. “All the buildings in the affected areas will carry out intelligent test and failure to meet up with that such buildings will be demolished and evacuated,”Ambode reiterated.
Managing Director Lagos State Emergency Management Agency ( LASEM), Mr Adesina Tiamiyu said the efforts of the rescue team has been tremendous and with the support of some Volunteers in the areas. According to him, so far, as at 3:00am on Thursday morning, over 40 causalities were saved and they are in various hospitals receiving treatment, especially Lagos lsland General hospital Marina, Lagos. “I cant ascertain the number of dead bodies, but the Ministry of Health will have such information and later that will be announced to the general public,” he added. He urged people to disregard the figure that have been given on the social media.
Dr Jide Idris Commissioner for Health, Lagos state said at the Lagos lsland general hospital disclosed that 20 Children and adult died in the collapsed building on the street of lsland area while 43 rescued alive receiving treatment and response to the treatment well and while some have been referred to the specialist government general hospital Lagos.
The Deputy Speaker Lagos State House of Assembly, Honorable Wasiu Eshilokun Sanni, representing Lagos lsland Constituency 1 said, “ visiting the scene of the collapsed building and furtherance to check on the causalities at the hospital is also indeed a sad day. I pray for the families affected by the unfortunate incident, that God grant them the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss and wish those receiving treatments speedy recovery.
Also, Executive Chairman Lagos lsland East Local Government, Honourable Kamal Bashou said, ‘’the efforts of the rescues team. He implored people to stay calm. He further, buttressed that the government will continually harness all its machineries to curtail this ugly incident in our society. The he I can't say categorically what led to the collapsed building until the integrity test is carried out.
Executive Chairman Lagos lsland West local Government, Honourable Tijani Adetoyose Olusi also commiserated with the people of Lagos lsland East, He said, “ its a sad news about three-storey building residential apartment collapsed in the areas of Lagos lsland. This incidence was hearth breaking situation and I have related with relevant authorities and have taken control, Olusi said.
Speaking with the Supervisor for Environment Lagos lsland local government, Honourable Moshood Olawale Eletu, stated at the scene that ,” it is unfortunate incident in street of Lagos. When I received the call about the incident , I put a call through to the rescue, who responded quickly. I quite appreciate the excellency Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, came to inspect the situation on ground”,he said.
Lagos lsland Childhood Gist (Nigeria and Diaspora) Coordinator Honourable Mudirak Ajibone and Executive members of the goup also sympathized with the families of the victims. They equally paid courtesy visit to the Lagos lsland General Hospital, where most of the school children are receiving treatment.
Speaking with the news men, Mudirak Ajibode said that ,”Lagos lsland Childhood Gist (Nigeria and Diaspora) would be going out in a few days time to sensitize the general public on the issues relating to building collapse. This will go along away to help the people to be acclimatized with dangers and signs of building collapsed, she submitted.
